FAQ

What is a Glories hat?
An authentic Glories hat is a colorful, fabric jester-style hat, which is distributed to seriously ill children in long-term hospital care. A Glories hat can only be produced in workshops under the direction of caring youth.

Why do we have to sew the decorations on? Gluing is so much faster!

Glue is a chemical product that many children, especially hospitalized children, are allergic to. Its use is not in harmony with the message we are trying to convey: "Stay healthy to help others". In addition gluing can result in hard, stiff places on the hat that hurt. Also, many times the hats need to be sterilized before they can be distributed to the sick children. Glued items would fall off. Glories hats are always sewn, and never, ever glued.

I want to make a hat from beginning to end. Why can't I?
The main focus of the production process is team-building. The process is designed to be an assembly-line with each station completing one of the twelve steps. Participants will quickly become an expert in their assigned step, which is a practical experience for productivity. It is very important that at the end the workshop each youth could say "we made the hats" instead of "I made a hat"

Why are there 500-1000 Glories hats in each HATS Headquarters® unit?
Five hundred to one thousand hats gives us a goal. The only way to really produce 500-1000 Glories hats is by using modern modular manufacturing techniques. This is important because it is the basis of international economic activity and represents the globalized world you are growing up in. When we explore the idea of "economy of scale" in regards to production and achieving the goal we can imagine the volume of goods consumed in the United States. Production for consumption is easily linked to the environment and the environmental effects on the health of children is becoming critical now. Perhaps now is a good time to look at your own personal consumption patterns and how they might affect the environment.

What is the minimum/maximum number of kids for Glories hats making workshop?
The Glories hat is produced under specific conditions using an assembly-line platform. It can be stretched (like accordion) to incorporate youth participants from a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 100. (Several times GHH has managed workshops for up to 400 youth participants!).

Can I have the pattern?
The pattern for the Glories hats is copy righted and licensed to GHH. In addition, Glories HATS Project® and HATS Headquarters® unit are all trademarked/ registered by USPTO and licensed to GHH. This is in order to protect the process of making the hats as a community-building process within the organizational activities of GHH. The pattern is licensed only through the program sponsorship.

It is our goal that all Glories hats are made in a "happy" group atmosphere, with youth and community working together. This is because we need to practice collaboration, skill-building and problem-solving together as we learn to address the larger challenges the future brings with the environment.

When the fabric and other sewing materials in each HATS Headquarters® unit are finished, can we re-supply the material inside the unit ourselves?
The materials are to be re-supplied by GHH for two reasons:
1. Quality control ;
2. Cost effectiveness.

We have worked hard with our suppliers to maintain the highest quality of materials while keeping costs very low. If you are in need of additional supplies please contact us.

Can we keep a hat for ourself?

No. The hats are made for children (or adults) suffering from serious illness. The best part of creating a Glories hat is giving it to a sick child! You can always take a picture of your hat as a souvenir.

Can we sell the hats for fundraising purposes?
No, Glories hats can not be sold. They are to be given freely to hospitalized children, their families and medical staff.

My neighbor/relative is seriously ill; can I bring him/her a hat?

Yes, with the agreement of the HATS Headquarters® unit sponsor, advisor or organizer you can present a hat representing the goodwill of the community to a neighbor or relative. The hat is always a gift.

Can I donate my sewing machine and/or fabric?
We use the same brand of sewing machine in each workshop and in each HATS Headquarters® unit. Donated sewing machines are usually old and are different brands, which confuse the youth when they change steps. In addition, when any part of machine needs to be replaced it is not easily found and can be very costly. For the fabric, we use only new cotton fabric and non-treated lining. Donated fabrics usually come from storage (perhaps for several months or years and possible in the basement). It is from experience that we reached the conclusion that donated sewing machines and fabrics can not be used for our workshops. The easiest way to help is through your financial donations that allow us to manage the supply of sewing machines and fabrics in an efficient cost effective process.

Is my donation, cash and in-kind, deductible from my taxes?

Yes, all your contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.

How the sponsor(s) is recognized?

A hang tag is attached to each Glories hat wherein the name and/or logo of sponsor(s) and the workshop organizer(s) are printed.
