Glories HATS Project®

The Glories HATS Project® (GHP) workshop is the catalyst for the entire programmatic approach of GHH. The project harvests goodwill, hope and compassion fueled by the generosity, willingness and spirit of collaboration of participating youth.

The GHP is a one time introductory workshop. The Glories hat production is presented as a simple assembly-line. It is based on the concept of a value-chain, in a modular process that uses 12-steps to assemble and decorate Glories hats. The process is designed to be developmentally appropriate for youth and to provide participants with the opportunity to develop and practice organizational management skills, division of labor, workflow analysis, teamwork, productivity, positive communication skills, self-discipline, and compassion, as well as team-support for hospitalized children.

The production configuration encourages forum discussion where youth consider the power of positive thinking, the concept of "giving back", and the importance of making healthy choices. Because "peer-support" for hospitalized children is solely generated by community youth, this allows for youth ownership of the project which, coupled with access to the service project, stimulates increased levels of civic engagement.

As the Glories hats come off the assembly-line, the natural question is: "How many hats do we need?" with a second question of "Why do we need so many?" At this point discussion could be engaged on how children's health is impacted by the environment which is compounded by our consumption patterns. Building community awareness and organizational capacity is at the foundation of change and GHP is an integral part of that effort.
