Milestones
Since 1997, in over 1200 community-based workshops, GHH conducted, evaluated and refined a service activity with over 95,000 youth participants sharing 500,000 hours of service to create and deliver 75,000 Glories hats to more than 40 children's hospitals across the country.
In 2005, 7,500 Glories hats, created by communities of youth and "Filled with happy thoughts!" were donated to hospitalized children to "Wear Glories hat and think happy thoughts!" Collaboration between Glories Happy HATS and Children's National Medical Center was the subject of an NBC4 Special Medical Report entitled "Healing and Learning". (Glories hats are now considered a therapeutic resource!)
In 2005, 35 one-day workshops (in-school, after-school, faith and county programming) were held with 4,144 youth participants and 2,637 adult volunteers generating 17,836 community service hours. Our off-site year-long HATS Headquarters® programs increased our outreach activities with 110 workshops galvanizing 1,960 youth participants and 380 adult volunteers to generate 9,360 hours of civic engagement.
In total, in 2005, Glories Happy HATS held 145 workshops with 9,121 participants generating 27,196 community service-service learning hours. These hours were used towards the President's Volunteer Service Award and Congressional Service Award Programs, both program partners with Glories Happy HATS. In our Virginia programs, 120 youth earned the President's Volunteer Service Award and six earned the Congressional Service Awards.
Our work with adjudicated and gang affiliated youth housed in the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Home had 20 youth in a post-D program serving 1200 hours creating and delivering 300 Glories hats to Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. The outcomes of this will be presented in the Georgetown University CoRal Network Conference at American University, Washington, DC. CoRAL Network is a consortium of community based organizations and eight DC Universities working together to promote positive social change.
